Overview

The Temporary HVAC Mechanic operates, inspects, and services commercial HVACR equipment including air handlers, condensing units, exhaust fans, hot water and steam boilers, chillers, rooftop units, cooling towers, pumps, starters, VFD’s, energy recovery units, VAV boxes, compressed air systems and lab exhaust systems. 

 

The Position is located at 626 Wallace Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15236. This position has limited benefits.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, adjust and maintain a full range of HVAC and refrigeration equipment.
  • Ability to think analytically, work independently or with others to set-up, install, troubleshoot, test, calibrate electronic components, and to inspect, maintain, modify, or repair problems with boilers, chillers, air handlers, VAV, DX and hydronic systems, fans, motors, pumps, electric and pneumatic controls, safety, and overcurrent protection devices.
  • Diagnosing complex defects and correcting sources of trouble.
  • Respond to routine and emergency trouble calls for repair and service.
  • Assist others by training or writing specifications for procedures, repairs, and new equipment.
  • Maintain required training, repair, and service records.
  • Monitor work done by outside vendors in accordance with facility requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned to insure timely project execution.

Qualifications

  • Certified HVAC technician possessing a Universal EPA refrigeration license in accordance with State or union rules.
  • High school diploma or GED/TASC/ HiSET and specific training and thorough knowledge of HVAC maintenance and installation.
  • Work safely under general supervision, follow written procedures and verbal instructions, exercise good judgement, and manage time to complete assignments.
  • Ability to follow oral / written instructions, exercise good judgement to complete assignments on time.
  • Understanding of the following: basic math, written and oral communication, reading blueprints / schematics / diagrams.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to use Microsoft Outlook email, payroll time entry, and complete required online training.
  • Complete and return required administrative paperwork on time as directed, (e.g., timesheets, vacation slips, classroom and computer-based training, log sheets, PM / PE / MODs, service records etc.).
  • Good attendance, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a team or independently.
  • Assist others by training / mentoring, teamwork.
  • Escort and monitor work performed by outside vendors in accordance with facility requirements.

 

Preferred Responsibilities

  • Associate degree in specialized technology applicable to electronics or HVAC trades, and safety training equivalent to OSHA 30.
  • Ten years journeyman level experience working as a HVAC Mechanic with experience in a commercial or industrial facility and broad knowledge of other disciplines.
  • Broad knowledge of other disciplines such as energy management control systems, general math, geometry, trigonometry, chemistry, biology, etc.
  • Excellent problem solving and technical skills, and familiar with laboratory operations is a plus.
  • Knowledge of OSHA 30 safety guidelines and applicable State and Federal laws.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft products, CMMS computer maintenance management systems and experience using Siemens and Johnson Controls BMS.
  • Familiar with laboratory operations and experience with MSA gas monitors/sensors is a plus.

  • Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.
  • Clean motor vehicle report (MVR).
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the IUOE Local 95 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Work Environment

  • Most positions involve work in environments (e.g., projects, labs, outside locations, etc. where mechanical equipment is being installed, tested, analyzed, monitored, or operated and / or maintained. Equipment may be loud and noisy and or have exposed moving components.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which requires following basic safety precautions.

 

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Such positions may involve routine lifting up to 50 pounds, regular handling, grasping, kneeling, working overhead, and carrying.
  • Constant use of vision and mental alertness is required working in all types of weather (heat, humidity, sub-zero cold).
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which require following basic safety precautions.
  • Position may involve work indoor or outdoor locations where loud equipment with exposed moving components is being operated, monitored, or maintained.
  • Able to work in awkward positions for extended periods of time or in confined spaces.
  • Position may involve routine carrying or lifting of 20 pounds (and occasionally up to 50 pounds), or working at heights, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds, and using scissors or aerial lifts.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English to respond to visual and audible alarms.

 

Integrated Safety Management

 

  • Observe and follow all corporate, federal, state and site environmental safety and health (ES&H) policies and procedures that pertain to the job classification being performed.
  • Perform only those tasks in which you have the required training, competence, knowledge, skills, and abilities to prevent injury to one’s-self, other employees, the public, or the environment.
  • Hazard and situational awareness for ES&H risks associated with the work. Perform work safely in accordance with hazard controls.
  • Report all unsafe operations, and, if necessary, exercise stop-work authority in cases of imminent danger.
  • Must wear proper PPE as required and ensure PPE is in acceptable condition.
  • Keep office space, operating area, control room, mechanical room, warehouse etc. clean and orderly.
  • Attend all safety meetings and stay current with assigned required training.
  • Maintain active involvement in the introduction, revision, and/or promotion of ES&H/ISM program activities.

Hours of Work

  • This is typically an 8 hour per day daylight schedule. Responding to callouts at night and on weekends or holidays as required, plus occasional weekend scheduled work assignments. Schedule is determined by the company and business needs.
