Overview

E2 is looking for a Substation Protection Engineer to join our team in Pasadena to support one of our main electric utility clients in California. The successful candidate will design protective relay schemes to ensure the safety and reliability of the Client’s grid.  He/She will support all Clients project types (DSP, TSP, SUB IR, DSERP, etc.) that involve equipment associated with protection. Types of projects include but are not limited to the following: electrical equipment infrastructure replacement (ex: circuit breakers, transformer banks, capacitor banks, reactors, disconnect switches, coupling capacitor voltage transformers, protection relays, remote terminal units (RTU), ground grid upgrades, etc.), load growth, distribution circuit additions, capacity increase, substation removals, etc. The successful candidate will report directly to the Substation Engineering Manager.”

Responsibilities

  • Design and review protection relaying schemes (i.e., AC and DC elementary(or schematic) drawings, logic drawings)
  • Perform line impedance calculation and generate calculation sheets
  • Review and update system data (impedance diagrams)
  • Update Computer Aided Protection Engineering (CAPE) short circuit study models
  • Perform calculations and provide detailed calculation sheets for all relays, field remote automatic reclosers (RARs), vacuum fault interrupters (VFIs), and fuse sizing
  • Identify compliance issues related to various PRCs and provide resolutions, if any.
  • Create electronic setting files for relays and RARs including protection functions and automation programming (if applicable)
  • Upload relay setting files in ASPEN Relay Database
  • Create printed setting reports (OD43 Summary Sheet) using Client’s standard template for each relay
  • Provide Protection support of identified projects to Substation Construction & Maintenance and Grid Operations (i.e., temp settings, MOVE program, etc.) when needed (e.g., in-servicing at off-hours)
  • Review and approve as-left relay settings file (in comparison with issued file) from Substation Construction & Maintenance (SC&M)
  • Attend job walks, meetings, or conference calls as applicable
  • Arc Flash Studies and settings to limit the Incident energy to 8 cal PPE
  • High Fire Red Flag considerations for setting ‘Fast Curves’ where applicable
  • Associated Test Plans for relay settings
  • Centralized Remedial Action Schemes(CRAS)/Remedial Action Schemes (RAS) effort including developing RAS relay settings, logic diagrams, test plans, and other similar tasks where applicable above
  • Other items as agreed upon

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET approved college or university.
  • 6+ years of experience working in substation system protection or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred

  • Professional Engineer’s License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required.
  • Experience with substation relay protection for electric utilities in California is highly desirable.

Wage Data Per State Requirements

Salary range for this position is $93,600 - $145,000. The starting salary will be commensurate with skill, education, experience, and working environment.
