Overview

The Janitor is responsible for cleaning services in various commercial facilities, typically consisting of common areas in designated buildings including hallways, bathrooms, conference rooms, and offices. The intent of this position description is to include duties, responsibilities, or qualifications necessary to identify and evaluate the job but does not necessarily include all details of the job.

 

Responsibilities

  • Physical Labor and Stamina: Position requires lifting up to 50 pounds, regular handling, grasping, kneeling, and carrying. Must stand for long periods of time and walk through buildings to perform cleaning tasks. Position requires bending or twisting of the body and repetitive movements of the shoulders, elbows, wrists, hands, and fingers. Constant use of vision and mental alertness is required.
  • Safety: Adhere to all safety protocols, site rules and company procedures. Maintain clean and unobstructed common areas, aisleways, entrances and exits.
  • Administrative and Training: Complete and return required administrative paperwork as directed, (e.g., timesheets, vacation slips, classroom and computer-based training, log sheets, service records etc.) Maintain current required training or certifications as required to perform the job.
  • Cleaning: Follow directions for: cleaning methods, cleaning product use and storage, proper safe use of tools and equipment. Ensure all work complies with task specifications, safety standards and quality expectations.
  • Communication: Communicate effectively regarding work progress, promptly notify supervision of any challenges. Perform daily equipment and facility inspections and report problems.
  • Perform emergency procedures, support plumbing cleanup, and other duties as assigned or as requested.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent, at least one (1) year work experience.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Physically fit with good coordination and ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Good attendance, interpersonal skills, and the ability to work as part of a team or independently.
  • Basic math, written and oral communication skills.
  • Basic computer experience including email, payroll time entry, webpage navigation and online training.
  • Work safely with minimal supervision, good understanding of safety protocols, follow written procedures and verbal instructions, perform administrative and manual work, and manage time to complete assignments.
  • Ability to follow oral, written, and visual instructions, exercise good judgement to complete assignments on time.

Preferred Responsibilities/Requirements

  • At least two (2) years of relevant cleaning or maintenance experience, or technical training.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft products.
  • Knowledge of applicable State and Federal laws and company policies and procedures.
  • Safety training equivalent to OSHA 10, and familiar with laboratory operations is a plus.
  • Familiar with laboratory operations is a plus.

Conditions of Employment

  • Possess and maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license and demonstrate a good driving record (no significant violations such as DUI, loss of license, inability to obtain personal insurance or currently covered under a high-risk insurance policy, etc.)
  • Pass a post-offer, pre-placement drug test, physical examination, and medical history check.
  • Pass a pre-employment criminal background check and have a clean motor vehicle report (MVR).
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the IUOE Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Work Environment

  • Position requires work in commercial government facilities (e.g., warehouse, offices, projects, labs, outside locations, etc. where mechanical equipment is being installed, tested, analyzed, monitored, operated and/or maintained. Equipment may be loud, noisy and/or have exposed moving components.

 

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Work environment involves some exposure or risk to physical hazards which require following basic safety precautions. Constant use of vision and mental alertness is required working in all types of weather (heat, humidity, sub-zero cold).
  • Position may involve work indoor or outdoor locations where loud equipment with exposed moving components is being operated, monitored, or maintained.
  • Able to perform all the typical repetitive physical requirements found in a warehouse position such as: walking, pushing, pulling, handling, grasping, kneeling, working overhead.
  • Able to work in awkward positions for extended periods of time or in confined spaces.
  • Position may involve routine carrying or lifting of 20 pounds (and occasionally up to 50 pounds), or working at heights, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds, and using scissor or aerial lifts.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English to respond to visual and audible alarms.

 

Integrated Safety Management

  • Observe and follow all corporate, federal, state and site environmental safety and health (ES&H) policies and procedures that pertain to the job classification being performed.
  • Perform only those tasks in which you have the required training, competence, knowledge, skills, and abilities to prevent injury to oneself, other employees, the public, or the environment.
  • Hazard and situational awareness for ES&H risks associated with the work. Perform work safely in accordance with hazard controls.
  • Report all unsafe operations, and, if necessary, exercise stop-work authority in any situation posing imminent or danger.
  • Must wear proper PPE as required and ensure PPE is in acceptable condition.
  • Keep office space, operating area, control room, mechanical room, warehouse etc. clean and orderly.
  • Attend all safety meetings and stay current with assigned required training.
  • Maintain active involvement in the introduction, revision, and/or promotion of ES&H/ISM program activities.

Hours of Work

Typical shift is 8 hours per day, M-F daylight schedule, and must be able to occasionally work after hours or overtime. Schedule is determined by the company and business needs.
