Overview

Responsible for the deliverables associated with substation design projects supporting one of our largest electric utility clients.  The substation “physical” design activities include yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material. The substation “protection and control” design activities include one-line & three-line diagrams, AC & DC elementary & logic diagrams, front & rear panel elevations and wiring, supervisory & control drawings, electrical vendor equipment wiring diagrams, complete cable schedule and bill of materials. The successful candidate will ultimately have approximately 70% technical and project management work and 30% management responsibilities. The position will be reporting directly to the Substation Engineering Manager.

Responsibilities

Technical Execution and Project Oversight

  • Initiate Projects: complete project initiation documents, which include detailed work scope/outline, budget, and schedule for completion.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed phases of engineering/design work for project.
  • Design, provide quality reviews or technical oversight for engineering deliverables.
  • Develop & specify equipment, assemble documents & other requirements for assignments of projects using depth & breadth of expertise in own discipline.
  • Oversee projects to ensure designs are compliant with applicable company, local, state, and national codes, and standards.
  • Project Definition: assist Project Team in defining/clarifying project scope and level of detail required satisfying customer expectations and projecting requirements.
  • Maintain Project Status: keep the project status reporting system (database) current with the actions and changes that take place on assigned projects, so the overall organization is able to respond to client requests.
  • Monitoring budget and schedule, assigning resources to a project, communication and collaboration with the client's project managers and project engineers, collaborating and mentoring with design team, and working with other departments.
  • Control Costs: assist Project Managers in controlling project expenditures and schedule performance as necessary to satisfy project requirements and ensure satisfactory budget performance on all projects including making recommendations for notices of potential scope change.
  • Maximize Project Profitability: through appropriate project budgeting/pricing, utilization of resources and cost controls, maximize the profit margin on individual projects.
  • Coordinate/Communicate with Peers: work with project team to identify, document and resolve changes that may impact schedule and budget performance of project.
  • Communicates effectively with project team and clients as required to facilitate coordination of design or construction activities and flow of technical information. This includes tracking/resolving action items, information requests and assisting the design team in the resolution of technical issues as required.
  • Support the development and implementation of client’s project engineering/management tools, standards, and processes to support successful project engineering implementation.
  • Must be able to develop an understanding of numerous utility stakeholder departments.

Leadership & Staff Development

  • Manage Project Implementation: leads assigned project team, ensuring that project goals/objectives are achieved, and all business processes and applicable procedures are followed.
  • Manage a Protection & Control and Physical Design team working on projects for a client with a growing workload.
  • Lead a team of engineers and designers to develop efficient, safe, and constructible design solutions for brownfield and greenfield substation projects at conceptual, feasibility and engineering stages through project closeout.
  • Ensures projects are closed-out and archived in a timely manner in accordance with applicable procedures.  Analyzes trends on project performance metrics and makes recommendations to project management team on corrective actions.
  • Must be able to conduct large meetings/calls with numerous project stakeholders, drive consensus and resolution to challenges discussed, drive assignment, follow-up, and completion, of action items.
  • Typically assists with performance management process, mentoring, recognition, and any corrective actions required.
  • Participates in strategies to sell substation design services to clients. This will involve participating and providing input into project proposal activities, developing relationships with client counterparts, establishing project specific engineering execution plans and cost estimates, capabilities presentations, technical papers, etc.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET approved college or university.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience working in substation design or similar with utility or consulting engineering firm.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office suite (e.g., Excel, Word, and Outlook).
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

 

Preferred

  • Professional Engineer’s License in Electrical Engineering preferred but not required.
  • Experience with substation design and construction standards for Southern California Edison strongly desired.

Wage Data Per State Requirements

The Salary range for this position is $140,000 to $165,000. The starting salary will be commensurate with skill, education, experience, and working environment.
