Overview

An Education Specialist provides administrative support to the federal STEM Education and Outreach Support Services office. Performs various clerical and secretarial duties requiring knowledge of office routine and an understanding of the organization, programs, and procedures related to the work of the office. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide a broad range of education outreach support services.
  • Support Annual Science Bowl Competitions in preparation and execution to include team and volunteer solicitation and registration, coordinating communications with event venues, coordinating multimedia products, and addressing participant inquiries.
  • Maintain and keep current website content for STEM Education & Outreach and Science Bowl.
  • Monitor STEM Education & Outreach email account to record, track and address requests received and maintain schedules in calendar.
  • Assist in coordinating activities for STEM Education & Outreach by maintaining client contacts, requests, interactions, event logistics, etc.
  • Maintain STEM activity inventory of materials, supplies and equipment and create and route requisitions to replenish inventory.
  • Provide professional and timely correspondence to STEM Education & Outreach clients including students, teachers, administrators, parents, community members and business/industry.
  • Collect and maintain STEM Education & Outreach data and statistics by collecting and recording appropriate qualitative and quantitative program data and maintaining a spreadsheet of activities.
  • Provide broad support to special outreach events to include logistics, content selection, registration, activity selection, presentations, photo and videography, and event evaluation.
  • Support to multimedia functions also included.
  • Other duties as assigned to ensure timely project execution.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: 

  • High school diploma and 4 years’ experience with K-12 education outreach activities that include STEM related curricula.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse clients including K-12 students, parents, teachers, administrators, community members and professionals.
  • Ability to effectively present to K-12 classrooms.
  • General administrative support experience.
  • Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
  • Excellent grammatical and proofreading skills.
  • Must be able to operate general office equipment including but not limited to computer, phones, fax, copiers, printers and related media and information devices.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Ability to learn government software programs and systems.
  • Ability to work independently on projects requiring research and preparation of briefing or presentation materials.
  • Ability to anticipate requirements, apply judgement and choose among widely varying methods and procedures to prioritize and process tasks.
  • Ability to communicate and interact with others at various levels of management, both in person and/or by telephone to conduct business.
  • Ability to work under time pressure and rapidly for long periods to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Excellent attitude, courteous and professional demeanor, and enthusiastic team member

Preferred Responsibilities/Requirements:

  • Associates degree and 2 years’ experience with K-12 education outreach activities that include STEM related curricula.
  • Minimum 3-5 years’ professional office experience in administrative, technical and/or customer service function.
